The two-storey, square-plan brick house that filled these blocks in the 1910s and 1920s: a hipped roof, a full basement, floors framed for the loads of the day, and a kitchen at the back that was sized for a much smaller appliance than the one in it now.
The range grew, the room did not
A thirty-six or forty-eight inch range dropped into an opening that was widened once, with cabinetry built hard to both sides, leaves nothing to grip and nowhere for the unit to go but forward. In a galley that is a metre and a bit across, forward means the range and the technician are competing for the same floor. It is workable, it is just slower, and it is the single most useful thing you can tell us when you ring.
What the pop-top left behind
A pop-top rarely touches the kitchen services. The gas run, the vent and the circuit that were adequate for the original house are extended rather than redrawn, and the result usually performs — until a wider appliance asks more of them. Long duct runs with extra elbows are the commonest one here, and they show up as a hood that sounds busy and clears nothing.
Old floors and a levelled range
Refinishing the floor is almost a rite of passage in these houses, and a range that comes out for it goes back onto a surface that is a few millimetres higher than the one it was levelled to. The legs want resetting, the anti-tip bracket wants re-seating in the new floor rather than the old, and the door of the oven wants checking against the counter it now sits closer to.

- Whether the kitchen services were extended during a pop-top rather than redrawn, and where the duct actually runs
- Whether a new floor has gone down since the range was last levelled
- Where the gas shutoff is, and whether it can be reached with the range pushed home
